The Internet Reptile Mercury Vapour Bulb (MVB) is an “all in one” lamp providing infra-red (Heat), UVA (Visible Light) and UVB from a single bulb.

This type of lamp cannot be used with a thermostat, so is commonly used in open topped tortoise tables or other well ventilated enclosures which help to avoid heat build-up.

Now available in 4 wattages; the following information is a guide to help you choose the correct bulb and safe installation distance from your pet.

  • 80w (lamp to animal distance approx. 25-35cm)
  • 100w (lamp to animal distance approx. 35-45cm)
  • 125w (lamp to animal distance approx. 45-60cm)
  • 160w High Output (lamp to animal distance approx. 60-75cm)

In warmer areas and in summer months, it can be used in isolation to create a warm basking area. In cooler areas, or for a wider beam of visual light, can be used in conjunction with a regular flood or halogen lamp controlled by a dimming thermostat. Alternatively, installation in a ‘dome’ type fitting can help to increase temperatures at the warmest part of the enclosure.

Aim to create a range of bright and shaded areas with different temperature and UV levels within the enclosure; this will allow your pets to correctly thermoregulate by choosing when and where they bask.

Installation and Warranty:

  • Install at a safe distance, in a quality heat resistant (ceramic) fitting or clamp lamp (min diameter 20cm)
  • Position vertically (hanging downwards), not at an angle
  • Not suitable for use with a thermostat
  • Protect against knocks or accidental contact when in use
  • Protect against accidental contact with water
  • Always allow the bulb to fully cool before moving or repositioning.

Safety Notice:  MVB Lamps are designed for Reptile Use Only.  Install as to avoid prolonged human exposure and never stare at the lamp. Increasing install distance and ensuring vertical installation may help minimise the risk of photosensitive conjunctivitis which has been attributed to the use of MVB lamps.  Consider the use of High OutPut T5 lighting and a separate thermostatically controlled heating source where possible.
